Summer Reading List for Grades 1-3

In the eyes of many parents and students, summer is not only a time for relaxation and joy but also an opportunity to excel academically. In Greater Vancouver’s elite private education system, achieving academic success is a goal, and Crofton House, a top girls’ school in Vancouver, has recommended a reading list for students in grades 1-3 to help achieve this.

The list includes picture books with simple language and rich illustrations, as well as fun books about Mars exploration and animal life. These are classic children’s books suitable for young elementary school students.

Leveled reading involves providing children with a reading plan and specific books according to their age and language proficiency. Reading by grade level is a mainstream classroom activity. Particularly in lower elementary grades, English focuses mainly on reading without a unified textbook. Schools and teachers select materials for students to read based on the curriculum standards set by the educational board, which also serves as resources for learning vocabulary, grammar, and writing.

In Greater Vancouver, teachers use a scientific benchmark to select books, continually assessing children’s reading levels at different ages to help gradually improve their reading skills. Specifically, in Grade 1, teachers read to students with expressive storytelling and interact with them. By Grade 2, students have some independent reading ability, and teachers choose engaging picture books that are easy to perform, encouraging students to read and act them out. In higher grades, students primarily read independently.

At first glance, it seems that children are reading extracurricular books that do not overlap with their current coursework. However, reading these books enhances their reading skills, enabling them to appreciate world classics in middle school.

Private education in Greater Vancouver also considers reading a lifelong beneficial habit. Private education believes that while individual wisdom is limited, one can gain different insights from many books, thus gathering wisdom and avoiding more life detours.

When students feel confused or lost, they can also draw strength from books. Therefore, Yingde Education recommends that parents continue to cultivate their children’s reading habits during the summer, supported by the recommended book lists from various schools.

Summer is the season for reading and engaging in different themed camps. Among them, the private school interview camp for ages 2-5, hosted by Yingde Education, is a starting point for young children to realize their dream of joining prestigious private schools.
