Common App Goes Live: 4.37 Million Sign-Ups in Just 4 Days
On August 1, the Common U.S. College Applications officially opened for the 2026 Fall admissions cycle. Within just four days, application activity hit record levels:
4,379,860 students registered, a 13% increase compared to last year;
15,103 applicants submitted 41,125 applications, averaging 2.7 schools per applicant;
The first completed application was submitted just 1 hour 10 minutes after launch, to Loyola University New Orleans.
The message is clear: competition is heating up earlier than ever.
Why Is Common App So Popular?
Common App is one of the three major U.S. application systems (CA, UC, Coalition) and by far the most widely used, covering 1,000+ colleges, including most Top 100 institutions.
Key advantages include:
One platform for many schools—streamlined process, single profile.
Efficiency—general essays can be submitted across multiple applications.
Broad coverage—Ivy League, top liberal arts colleges, and leading state flagships are all included.
For most students, using Common App is no longer optional—it’s essential.
ED/EA: Early Deadlines Approaching
With the system now live, the countdown to early applications has begun:
ED (Early Decision): Most deadlines fall on November 1, with some extending to mid-November. Binding in nature—if accepted, students must withdraw other applications.
EA (Early Action): Typically due between November 1–15, non-binding, with results released in December–January.
For ambitious applicants aiming at dream schools, ED offers the highest odds, but must be pursued carefully.
U.S. College Applications Trends for 2026
Rising applicant pool: With over 4.3M sign-ups in four days, the competition is intensifying.
Multiple submissions per student: The average of nearly 3 schools per applicant will likely increase as RD approaches.
Early applications matter more: Acceptance rates for ED/EA remain 2–3 times higher than RD, making early planning critical.
